The NJ Judiciary Announces New Guidelines for Using Electronic Devices in Court Proceedings

The relationship between the judiciary and the media is constantly evolving. Sometimes, the changes in media happen much more quickly than in the court system. You cannot just walk into a courtroom in New Jersey and snap photos of plaintiffs, defendants, judges or lawyers.

Reporters need very specific permission to take photographs in court. Now that we have the ability to instantly share information via Twitter, etc., the courts have taken notice. The ability to instantly transmit information can adversely impact litigants in all areas of law. These new guidelines take into account the rapid nature of changes in the media landscape.

Take note, these rules will apply to all court users, not just reporters. The new guidlines will go into effect Feb. 2, 2015. Read about the revised guidelines here:
